CYS Releases New CD

The award-winning California Youth Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Leo Eylar, announces the release of a new CD, ‘The Maestro’s Pick: Orchestral Virtuoso Showpieces, featuring Ashley Lau and the California Youth Symphony’
(California Youth Symphony, $15).

Proceeds from the limited edition CD will benefit the first-ever CYS tour to China in June 2006.

Recorded live at two concerts during the 2004 – 2005 season, ‘The Maestro’s Pick: Orchestral Virtuoso Showpieces’ features award-winning violinist Ashley Lau as soloist in the Sibelius Violin Concerto. The CD also includes the California Youth Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Leo Eylar, performing Franz Liszt’s Mazeppa, Richard Strauss’s ‘Dance of the Seven Veils,’ and Medea’s Dance of Vengeance by Samuel Barber.

   
           
 
California State East Bay Honor Band

   
 
CYS principal trumpet Ryan Svendsen was recently chosen as principal trumpet for the California State East Bay Honor Band at Hayward. A highlight of the Honor Band’s season is its performance at the 20th annual California State East Bay Festival of Bands at 8:00 p.m. on November 4, 2005 on the campus of CSU Hayward.

   
           
 
Music Teachers' Association of California Competition

   
  Several CYS musicians won awards at the 2005 Music Teachers' Association of California (MTAC) State Competition, held in Sacramento.
  • Ashley Lau (Senior Orchestra concertmaster) - 1st place, Senior Strings.
  • Julie Chen (violin), Martin Fukui (viola), and Tobias Mao (cello) - 1st place, Senior Instrumental Chamber Music.
